In recent years, the Indo-Pacific has emerged as the strategic centerpiece of global politics. The region is not only a hub of economic dynamism, but also a focal point for global security concerns. Governments around the world— including the United States, Canada, European countries, and beyond—have increasingly redirected their strategic focus toward the region, acknowledging that a stable Indo-Pacific is not merely a regional concern, but one intrinsically tied to global stability.
Taiwan’s crucial role in global Indo-Pacific strategies is expanding rapidly, as more and more countries recognize its shared commitment to democracy, economic innovation, and regional security. As one of the region’s most vibrant democracies and technologically advanced economies, Taiwan is not only a key stakeholder but also a natural partner in shaping a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. As global stability and prosperity become ever more intertwined with developments in the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan’s role in advancing shared strategic interests is not only timely—it is indispensable.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy+ (NSP+) has become a cornerstone of its regional engagement—one that both aligns with and reinforces the objectives of many Indo-Pacific strategies around the world, particularly in fostering resilience, connectivity, and innovation. At a time when deepening regional ties is a strategic imperative, advancing Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy+ (NSP+) has strengthened its relationships and elevated Taiwan’s profile as a key leader in digital innovation, green transition, democratic resilience, and critical supply chain security. It can be considered the core of Taiwan’s emerging Indo-Pacific strategy.
As the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation (TAEF) marks its 7th anniversary, we are proud of our efforts to promote the core objectives of the NSP+ by facilitating policy dialogues, bringing emerging leaders and thinkers to Taiwan, supporting regional civil society cooperation, empowering international young talent, and publishing influential reports. Our work is grounded in Taiwan’s democratic values and commitment to long-term, people-centered partnerships. Looking ahead, we aim to continue advancing Taiwan’s engagement in the region and elevating its essential role in building a more resilient and cooperative regional order.
This report brings together six essays from international experts reflecting on how various countries are implementing Indo-Pacific strategies, and how these complement Taiwan’s NSP+. We are pleased to present this collection— originally published by the Global Taiwan Institute (GTI) in Global Taiwan Brief, Volume 9, Issue 23—and hope this re-publication brings broader attention to these important perspectives.
On behalf of TAEF, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Global Taiwan Institute for their support and collaboration. We look forward to continuing our partnership with GTI and other like-minded institutions, working together to enhance policy dialogue and build social and strategic influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
